I must tell you that the handle nut has a shoulder on it that goes in and it takes a thin 1/4″ drive 3/8″ socket and if you can’t find one thin enough, you will have to grind one down so that it will work.
Your best bet is a cheap Japanese set, which is where I found one that would work.

The Level-Wind parts are laid out in order and the Handle Shaft Sleeve.
You can turn it until the holes line up and put a few drops of oil right on the gears and then turn it to close.
Also to the left is the Bearing Cap removed and above is the Extra Pawl and the cap that holds it in it’s storage compartment in the Head Plate.
I moved the Handle and parts for it to the top and that spring behind the Free-Spool Button is what re-engages the gears for retrieve.

I will go ahead a take these parts apart and show them later also.
In this 4th photo, you see it back together somewhat and in free spool position.
When you push the button on the handle, the spring wire goes into that groove and holds the crankshaft in and thus dis-engages it from the Handle Shaft Sleeve.
I can now tell you exactly how it works and what is no doubt wrong with yours.
I also took lots of photos so that will be your schematic.
This photo shows the inside of the Inner & Outer Head Plates.
